Mitigating environmetal externalities during agricultural transition

05 July 2018

Land scarcity and increasing domestic demand necessitate the modernization and intensification of Chinese crop and animal production. These structural changes however also seem to intensify environmental stress caused by agriculture. This research project is concerned with management of wastes in Chinese agriculture during transformational processes and adequate policy measures to mitigate externalities. Herein, the focus lies on waste management in hog farming and crop residue burning in maize farming along two sets of farm and plot level data collected in various Chinese provinces. The results indicate high externalities especially for mid-size farms in transition and highlight the need for incentive-based policy.
